Tate Britain is located in Milbank, London, housing a vast art collection concentrating on works from the United Kingdom since Tudor times, Tate Britain has numerous exhibitions throughout the year. It is well known for a large collection of J.M.W.Turner's paintings, sketch books etc. Also, the gallery has a good collection from the Pre-Raphaelites and 19thcentury UK arts.Recently I have found that it is getting increasingly difficult to casually visit Museums and Galleries in London (eg. long time wait in the queue or pre booking via the internet etc.) Seen from this point of view, one is still able to visit Tate Britain without pre-booking or long queues, to casually visit in and enjoy the exhibition without the usual huge number of visitors. I spent a good two hours in the gallery at the beginning of this year. Since I went to the Flatford Mill last summer, I have paid more attention to the work of John Constable. Also, I found the picture of “The Eve of St Agnes” by Arthur Hughes. “The Eve of St. Agnes” is a romantic poem written by John Keats and it was one of the favorite theme for the Pre-Raphaelites. A long time ago I had bound a book of Keats's poems for a DB exhibition. The Tate Britain collection also has modern and contemporary works and I felt a sense of closeness to two works. A small work by Kurt Shwitters who use to live in Barnes and “Sparkles of Glory 2023” by Nils Norman which is a series of 4 upholstered pieces of furniture. One of the pieces of furniture is shaped like St.Mary's Church in Putney. Finally I had a nice cup of coffee in the museum cafe, with the library next door. The library had a display of some interesting items/books from their archives. All in all it was nice day out, cheering myself up during the miserable cloudy weather in January.

テート・ブリテンはロンドンのミルバンクにあります。チューダ朝からの英国の芸術作品を中心とした膨大な作品が収められていて、年間を通じて数多くの展覧会を開催しています。J.M.W. ターナーの絵画、スケッチブックなどの多数のコレクションでも知られており、また、ラファエル前派や１９世紀の英国の美術の良いコレクションも保持しています。最近、ロンドンの博物館や美術館を気軽に訪れるのがだんだん難しくなってきているように感じます（例えば、入場のために長い時間並ばなければならなかったり、ネットによる事前予約が必要だったりなど...）その点から言うと、テート・ブリテンは事前予約や長い列に並ぶことなしに気軽に訪れることができ、多くの人混みに悩まされることなく展覧会を楽しむことができます。年の初めにこの美術館を訪れ、２時間ほど良い時間を過ごすことができました。昨年の夏にフラットフォード・ミルに行って以来、ジョン・コンスタブルの作品に注意を払うようになりました。そして、アーサー・ヒューズの「聖アグネスの前夜」を見つけました。「聖アグネスの前夜」はジョン・キーツによって書かれたロマンチックな詩でラファエロ前派が好んで描いたテーマの一つです。かなり前の話ですが、私はこのキーツの詩集をDBの展覧会の為に製本したことがあります。テート・ブリテンのコレクションはモダン、現代の作品もあり、次の２つの作品には親しみを感じました。バーンズに住んでいたこともあるクルト・シュビッタースの小品、そしてニールズ・ノーマンによる「スパークルス・オブ・グローリー2023」これは、覆いをつけた４つの家具のシリーズです。そのうちの一点はパットニーにある聖メアリー教会を形取ったものになっています。最後に図書館の隣にある美術館カフェで美味しいコーヒーをいただきました。図書館も保管庫からの興味深い品や本を展示していました。総じて、1月の惨めな曇り空が続く中、自分自身を元気づける良い外出でした。
