The Bodleian Library and The St. Bride Foundation

The wall display cabinet in the Layton Room at St. Bride Foundation

In the June blog, I mentioned that the Designer Bookbinders International Competition Exhibition started at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. This touring exhibition has been in the St. Bride FoundationLondon this month. The private view held on the 15th of August. The books are displayed in the Layton Room and the reception was held in the Lecture Room. Drinks and some snacks were provided and images of all entrant's works projected on to a big screen. One of the unique points of this touring exhibition is that every entrant form the country that the touring exhibition is in are invited to exhibit their bindings alongside the selected exhibition entries. At this venue, we can see several UK bookbinders work.
The display cabinet at St. Bride Foundation is specially made for fine art work and special lights have been installed. The brightness of the lights can be adjusted, the lights are very cool so that there is no heat damage for the art works. The Layton room is very bright therefore I could see the delicate details on several books that I could not see at the Bodleian Library. Some people told me, they did notice that I had hand dyed the leather with leaf shaped motif when they had view my work in the Bodleian’s dim room.
The atmosphere in the Bodleian exhibition room was dark and solemn, it was difficult to see subtle colour dyed in the dim room. However, because of this the white flowers were more in focus against the dark purple background and I felt that this gave another, perhaps more mysterious feeling to the scene of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” of fairies gathered in the forest garden. This feeling matched my intention of the design. Anyway, I realized again that the completed book has different moods depending on the display and lighting.
This exhibition in London will finish on the 20th of September and the next venue is the Bibliotheca Wittockiana in Brussels. The Japan touring exhibition will start on the 28th of September 2014 at Nerima Art Museum in Tokyo.
I look forward to see how the display will make at the venue in Japan.
