Recently, I went to the festival of the “Orchid”
at the Princess of Wales Conservatory in Kew Gardens.
The “Orchid” is more than I expected. The conservatory
was full of orchids and very nice it was too. According of the
Kew magazine, there are 5,290 orchids on display in the festival this year. One
of the visitors said that “It is gorgeous, and it was not like that last year.”
It is first time for me to come this festival but I agree, it was gorgeous, and
I could not stop taking photographs.
I like orchids, perhaps orchids are a familiar
plant in my family. My father was particularly interested in the
category of “Toyoran” (the oriental orchid) which by the cause
of appreciation standard based on oriental orchid that was valued high in China
and Japan from ancient times, cultivation is the name of appreciated
Orchidaceae plants. For example Cymbidium goeringi. However, he also
liked other plants as well. There are several Cymbidiums,
Phalaenopsis orchid and Dendrobium at home.
Also, my brother likes orchids as well and once he looked after
more than 60 orchid pots. I am not sure at the present situation. Perhaps they
have reduced.
I have modest number of orchid pots in my home. Two
orchids have flowers now. The Phalaenopsis orchid and Oncidium Sharry
Baby. The Phalaenopsis orchid is given by my senior
alumnae and her husband who have lived in London more than 10 years ago. When
they back to Japan, they had chosen the best orchid from their collection for
me. It is really excellent orchid and I enjoy the flowering of it every year.

先日、キュー植物園のプリンセス・オブ・ウェールズ温室で開催されている「蘭」展に行ってきました。
「蘭」展は私の期待以上で、温室は多くの蘭で素晴らしく飾られていました。キュー植物園の定期刊行物によると、今年の催しでは5,290の蘭が展示されているとのことです。見学にいらしていた方は「豪華だわ。昨年はこんなではなかった。」とおっしゃっていました。私は初めてこの催しに行ったのですが、確かにとても豪華で、ひたすら写真を撮り続けてしまいました。
私は蘭が好きです。多分、蘭は私の家族に馴染みのある植物だからだと思います。私の父は特に「東洋ラン」に興味を持っていました。「東洋ラン」は中国と日本で古くから珍重されたものに基づいた鑑賞基準をもとに、観賞用として栽培されているいくつかの蘭科の植物に対しての呼び名です。例えば春蘭などです。とはいえ、父は他の植物も好きで、家にはシンビジューム、胡蝶蘭、デンドロビュームなどがありました。同じく、兄も蘭が好きで一時期は60以上の蘭の鉢を持っていたようですが、今はどういう状況でしょうか。多分少なくなっていると思います。
私も適度な数の蘭の鉢を持っています。今、２つの蘭が開花しています。胡蝶蘭と赤紫のオンシジュームです。胡蝶蘭は10年以上前にロンドンにお住まいだった大学の先輩のご夫妻から頂いたものです。お二人が帰国されるときに蘭の鉢のコレクションの中から一番良いものを私の為に選んでくださいました。本当に優秀な蘭で毎年見事な開花をとても楽しんでいます。
