Two Titans

 

Recently, I had an opportunity to read “Two Titans”, written by Hans Schmoller who was a German and British graphic designer. He worked as Head of Typography and Design at Penguin Books from 1949 to 1976. “Two Titans” is a short essay about two contrasting typographers Giovanni (born Hans) Mardersteig and Jan (born Johannes) Tschichold who were active in Europe before and after World War Ⅱ. The book is published by The Typophiles (lovers of type) Inc. in 1990 and translated into Japanese being published by Robundo Publishing Inc. in 1994. Tschichold is a well known typographer for Japanese graphic designers and typographers but somehow Mardersteig is less known than Tschichold. Although, Mardersteig published several books with beautiful typography and when I think about these books that were made with great care, I always think he should be better known among bookbinders. Stanley Morrison, a British typographer active at the same time, roughly the same age as Madersteig and a generation older than Tschichold, was an influence for the two typographers. Both Mardersteig and Tschichold both grew up in Germany, however both had to move to other countries before the start of world war 2. Mardersteig moved to Switzerland and later to Italy for health reasons and a commission, Tschichold was forced to move to Switzerland for political reasons. “Two Titans” may appear to be a typography specialist book, but I think that it is interesting to read even if you do not have any knowledge of typography.

I may add that I bound a book designed by Tschichold “Die Bildersammlung der Zehnbambushalle” (English Title : Early Chinese Colour Prints) twenty years ago. The book has a number of reproduced early Chinses prints, edited by Tschichold. I was commissioned to make a Design Binding by a bookbinder who was also a very knowledgeable book collector.

最近、ドイツ生まれ（国籍は英国）のグラフィックデザイナー、ハンス・シュモーラによって書かれた「二人の巨匠」（日本版でのタイトルは「２人のタイポグラファ」を読む機会がありました。彼は１９４９年から１９７６年までペンギン・ブックのタイポグラフィーとデザイン部門での責任者として働いていました。「二人の巨匠」は第二次世界大戦の前後にヨーロッパで活躍していた２人の対照的なタイポグラファー、ジョバンニ（誕生時の名前はハンス）・マーダーシュタイクとヤン(誕生時の名前はヨハネス）・チヒョルトについて書かれた随筆です。この本は１９９０年にタイポフィリス（活字愛好者）社から出版され、１９９４年に日本語に翻訳された本が朗文堂から出版されました。チヒョルトは日本のグラフィック・デザイナー及びタイポグラファーの間ではよく知られたタイポグラファーですが、なぜかマーダーシュタイクはチヒョルトほど知られていません。とは言うものの、マーダーシュタイクは美しい活字を使ったいくつもの本を出版しており、細心の注意を払って作られたこれらの本について考えるとき、私は彼が製本家の間でもっと知られても良いのではないかと思っています。この２人のタイポグラファーに影響を与えた英国のタイポグラファー、スタンレイ・モリソンは同時期に活躍しており、マーダーシュタイクとはほぼ同年齢、チヒョルトより一回り年上でした。マーダーシュタイクとチヒョルトはどちらもドイツで育ちましたが、どちらも第二次世界大戦の始まる前に他国に移住しなければなりませんでした。マーダーシュタイクは健康上と仕事の都合上、スイスとそして後にイタリアへ移住し、チヒョルトは政治的な理由からスイスに移住することを余儀なくされました。「二人の巨匠」はタイポグラフィーの専門書のように見えますが、タイポグラフィーの知識がなくても面白く読めると思います。

余談になりますが、チヒョルトのデザインによる「十竹工芸所の画集」（英文書のタイトル：初期の中国の彩色版画）を２０年前に製本しました。この本はチヒョルトの編集により初期の中国の彩色版画のいくつかの複製画が含まれています。私は、製本家でとても博識のあったコレクターの依頼でこの本のデザイン製本をしました。

The Delaunay

 

Recently, a friend and myself found ourselves in the Waterloo area of London, feeling in need of refreshment we decided to look for a cafe for a cup of tea or coffee and cake. It was just then that I remembered that there is a nice cafe in Aldwych which is not so far from Waterloo Railway Station called The Delaunay Counter. The Delaunay Counter is a casual bar and cafe and is next door to The Delaunay which is a more formal style restaurant both of which are European/Viennese themed.In previous years I used to go to a hairdresser near by, so after I had my hair cut I would invariably have a cup of coffee and cake in cafe. I also enjoyed afternoon tea at the restaurant with friends who were visiting London from Japan. However, my hairdresser moved a few years ago and since then I have had not much chance to go to this cafe. The menu has changed a bit since I was last there, although the cafe still has a nice European feeling and I could have a nice strong coffee. While talking with my friend, I was reminded of the time of the pandemic. It was just after the first lockdown that I popped into the Delaunay Counter, after my hair cut as usual, but the cafe only offered takeaway service. During lockdown it seemed that everyone felt that they missed human interaction, missing family and friends or just the chance to talk with someone. When I bought a cup of coffee, I had a little chat with cafe's server. I think he also wanted to talk with someone and he gave me a nice chocolate as complimentary gift. It is one of my personal heartwarming memories from the pandemic.

先日、友人と私はロンドンのウォータールー辺りにいたのですが、気分転換をしたいと思い、お茶かコーヒーとケーキを楽しめるカフェを探すことにしました。ちょうどその時、ウォータールー駅から然程遠くないアルドウィッチにドローネ・カウンターという素敵なカフェがあることを思い出しました。ドローネ・カウンターはカジュアルなバー兼カフェで、それよりフォーマルなスタイルのヨーロッパ/ウィーン風レストラン、ドローネの隣にあります。以前はその近くの美容院に行っていたので、髪を切った後は必ずと言って良いほどそこで、ケーキとコーヒーをいただいていました。そして、友人が日本からロンドンにみえたときは、そのレストランでアフタヌーン・ティーを楽しんだこともあります。しかし、数年前に美容師さんが美容院を移動してしまったので、それ以来、このカフェに行く機会はあまりありませんでした。前回訪れた時からメニューは少し変わっていましたが、カフェはヨーロッパ風の良い雰囲気を保っており、濃くて美味しいコーヒーを楽しむことができました。友人と話をしているうちにふとパンデミックの時のことを思い出しました。最初のロックダウンが終った直後に、いつものように髪を切りに行った後にドローネ・カウンターに寄ったのですが、（当時）カフェは持ち帰りのサービスのみでした。ロックダウン中、誰もが人との交流、家族や友人との交流、誰かと話す機会を失い人恋しく感じていたように思います。私はコーヒーを注文した時にカフェでサービスをしてくれた人とちょっとおしゃべりをしました。多分、彼も誰かと話したかったのでしょう、美味しいチョコレートをおまけにつけてくれました。これは、パンデミックでの私の個人的な心休まる思い出の一つです。

The Very Rich Hours of The Duke of Berry

Usually the Duke of Berry's beautiful and very richly decorated Book of Hours, in the Musée Condé (Chantilly, France) is not on exhibition. When visitors do go to the museum they see a very good reproduction instead. However, there is a special exhibition of the real Duke du Berry's Book of Hours from June to October this year. Fortunately, one of my friends was visiting Europe in June, deciding that the chance to see the book could not be missed, we went to this exhibition.

This book is not only beautiful and famous, it is also an important piece in the history of art. When I was student at Joshibi Art University, in Tokyo, one of the courses used some pictures of this book for the students to copy the illustrations in the reproduction lesson. However I wasn’t on that course, so I didn’t know how these illustrations are so detailed and delicate until I carefully and minutely looked at the illustrations this time.

Chantilly is not far from Paris, it takes about half an hour from Gare du Nord by express train with Chantilly Castle being about 10 minutes from Chantilly rail station by bus. It was a nice sunny day when we went to the Castle. The Castle was so beautiful and well maintained. The library room and Musée Condéit was stunning but the special exhibition was in a different building that was about 5 minutes walk from the main Castle building. The Book of Hours’ sections were untied and displayed in standing glass panels that allowed us to see both sides of the pages. The book was smaller than I expected, therefore I was so impressed with the amount of detail in the illustrations. Unfortunately, my camera was not working on that day and my iPhone camera is just is not good enough to capture the beautiful details. It was a pity that most of panel descriptions were not in English, I should have thought about an earphone guide or, of course, studied a little more French. Anyway, I enjoyed the exhibition very much. After the exhibition, we went to the Castle restaurant and had lunch with Chantilly cream puff for dessert. The Chantilly cream is as beautiful as the Book of Hours.

フランスのシャンティ城にあるコンデ美術館所蔵の「ベリー公のいとも豪華なる時祷書」は通常展示されていません。美術館を尋ねる訪問者は、その代わりにとても良くできた複製本を見られます。しかしながら、今年の6月から10月まで「ベリー公のいとも豪華なる時祷書」の特別展覧会が開催されることになりました。幸い友人の一人が6月に欧州に来ることになり、この機会を逃すべくなく、我々はこの展覧会に行ってきました。この本は、ただ美しくて有名というのみならず、美術館史上でも重要な作品です。私が東京の女子美術に在学中、あるコースが（多分）修復作業の勉強の為かと思いますが、この本の幾つかの絵を使って模写するという授業を行なっていました。しかしながら、私はこのコースではなかったので、今回、間近で注意深くこのイラストレーションを見るまで、この作品がいかに細部にわたって描かれ、繊細であったか知りませんでした。シャンティは、パリからそれほど遠くない所にあり、パリの北駅から電車で約半時間ほど、シャンティの電車の駅からシャンティ城まではバスで１０分ほどです。我々がお城に行った日はとても良いお天気でした。お城はとても美しく、良く整備されていました。図書室とコンデ美術館は、素晴らしかったです。特別展覧会は、お城から5分ほど歩いた所にある建物で開催されていました。「時祷書」は一折りに解体されてガラスの立ちパネルのなかに展示されており、ページの両側が見られるようになっていました。本は、私が思っていたよりもちいさく、それゆえにそのイラストレーションの多くの細部にひどく感心しました。残念なことに、その日、私のカメラは具合が悪くて使えず、私のiPhoneのカメラは美しい細部を捉えるのには不十分でした。殆どのパネルの説明文は英語で書かれていなかったのは残念でした。イヤホンガイドか、もちろん、事前にもう少しフランス語を勉強しておくべきでした。展覧会を見た後、お城のレストランでシャンテリークリーム・シューのデザート付きのランチを頂きました。シャンティリークリームは時祷書と同じくらいに美味でした。

Anselm Kiefer : Early Works

 At the beginning of this month, I had the opportunity to visit Oxford for the biennial Fine Press Book Fair, held at the Examination School in Oxford with Designer Bookbinders having a stand at the event. Previously I had volunteered to be a member of the invigilation team. Though my spell as an invigilator was only an hour or so I wondered if there was something else I could do or see in Oxford. There is the “Anselm Kiefer: Early Works” Exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, so I went to the exhibition before DB stand invigilation. When I saw Kiefer's work for the first time, many years ago, I was overwhelmed by the sheer scale of his work. He has created several book arts which are also intriguing. The exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum is relatively small and concentrates on his early work. In one cabinet there is one of artists' books, opened at two pages. Beside the cabinet was a facsimile that viewers could open to see the complete contents, I think it is a great idea and I was able to get a real feel for his work. Most of Kiefer's art works deal with serious themes, although there are some watercolour paintings in this exhibition which was heart warming.

今月の初め、２年ごとにあるファイン・プレス・ブックフェアのためにオックスフォードに行く機会がありました。フェアはオックスフォードのエグザミネーション校で開催され、デザイナー・ブックバインダーズはそれに参加していました。私は(DBのスタンドでの）お当番をすることになっていたのですが、お当番の時間はわずか１時間でしたので、オックスフォードで他に何かするか、もしくは見るものはないかと思いました。「アンゼルム・キーファー、初期の作品展」がアシュモーリアン博物館でか行われていたので、DBスタンドでのお当番の前に行ってきました。随分前に初めてキーファーの作品を見た時は彼の作品の規模の大きさに圧倒されたものです。彼はとても興味深いいくつかのブック・アーツを制作しています。アシュモーリアン博物館での展覧会は比較的小さい規模の展覧会で彼の初期の作品に焦点をあてています。ブックアーツの作品の一つが見開きでケースに展示されており、そのケースの傍にはその本の全ての内容が見られるように複写本が置いてありました。これはとても良いアイデアで、彼の作品の全体像を感じることができました。多くのキーファーの作品は重いテーマを扱っていますが、この展覧会ではいくつかの水彩画作品が展示されておりそれは心和むものでした。

Mackintosh at Glasgow

During the Easter break from my bookbinding class I went to Glasgow for a few days. It was the second time I had visited Glasgow, my first visit was long time ago. Also, it was just a day return journey from Edinburgh, so I did not have much time to explore the city and all of its' attractions. In the central area of Glasgow the streets are laid out in a grid patten making it easy to walk around and to find places of interest. In addition, Glasgow has an subway system, opened December the 14th 1896 making it the 3rd oldest subway system in the world. Now officially known as the 'Glasgow Underground' it has two lines with 15 stations. Perhaps, when compared with other underground systems, the carriages are quite small and I felt a little bit squashed when sitting. But for all of that it is a very charming train. The reason that I wanted to go to Glasgow is because I am interested in C.R.Macintosh's works. During my few days in Glasgow I was able to see much of his work including The Mackintosh House in the Hunterian Art Gallery. One of the things that intrigued me in the museum was that alongside paintings there were also exhibited “Empty Frames”made by unknown makers, this was a very nice addition to the paintings as it highlighted the work of other artisans that contribute to the art world. Later, I found the similar frame used for Whistler's painting which more than probably made by the same unknown maker. After the gallery visit, I went to the Willow Tree Tea House and had lunch, the furniture was in the Macintosh style. Along with tea, cakes and food there was an corner that had a number of Machintosh themed souvenir goods. I felt the Willow Tree Tea House was very much a tourist spot, although tea and food were quite good and the staff were kind. The following day, I went to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The Center Hall was stunning and the museum also exhibit several Mackintosh and Glasgow style works. When I went to Glasgow, I used the direct train from London Euston but for the return journey I went via Edinburgh traveling down the east coast line so I was able to enjoy the beautiful costal landscape.

製本のクラスのイースター休暇の間、数日グラスゴーに行ってきました。グラスゴーに行くのは２度目で、初めて行ったのはかなり昔のことです。それもエジンバラからの日帰りだったので、街と粗方の名所を見て回る時間がありませんでした。グラスゴーの中心地の通りは碁盤の目のように配置されており、行きたい所を見つけやすく歩きやすい街でした。そのうえ、グラスゴーには1896年12月14日に始まった世界で３番めに古い地下鉄があります。現在、正式には「グラスゴーの地下鉄」と知られており、２路線と１５の駅があります。多分、他の地下鉄のシステムと比べた時、列車はかなり小さく、座席に座った時、少し窮屈な感じがしました。しかし、それらを全て含めても、とても魅力的な列車でした。私がグラスゴーに行きたかった理由は、C.R.マッキントッシュの作品に興味を持っていたからです。数日間のグラスゴー滞在中、ハンタリアン美術館のマッキントシュ・ハウスを含め多くの彼の作品を見ることができました。この美術館で私がとても興味深く思ったことの一つは、絵画展示と並んで不明の製作者による「空の額」の展示があったことです。これは芸術に貢献する、全ての職人の作品に焦点を当てた素晴らしい特別展示でした。その後、それと良く似た額がホイッスラーの作品の額に使われているのを見つけました。ほぼ間違いなく同じ不明の製作者による額だと思います。美術館の後に、マッキントッシュ様式の家具を使っているウィローツリー・ティーハウスでお昼をいただきました。お茶、ケーキや食品の傍にマッキントッシュをテーマとしたお土産物コーナーがあり、ウィローツリー・ティーハウスはとても観光客め当てのスポットという感じでしたが、お茶や食べ物はなかなか美味しく、スタッフの人達は親切でした。翌日、ケルビングローブ美術館と博物館に行きました。ここの中央ホールは素晴らしく、この美術館も数多くのマッキントッシュとグラスゴー様式の作品を展示していました。グラスゴーに行った時はロンドンのユーストン駅から直接行く列車を利用したのですが、帰りはエジンバラで乗り換えて東海岸線を通って下ってきたので、美しい海岸風景を楽しむことができました。
