Alphabets Alive !

On the 9th of this month, I went to Oxford for the Oxford Fine Press Book Fair (9th and 10th of December) in the Examination Schools. Designer Bookbinders had a stand during the Fair, in the afternoon I took my turn to invigilate our stand. I arrived in Oxford earlier in the day, so, after a quick lunch near the venue, I popped into the Bodleian Westorn Library to view a small exhibition called “Alphabets Alive !”  The Alphabet is always popular theme not only in the visual arts but in literature as well, to this end there are some interesting works in the exhibition. One of the exhibiting books “An Alphabet” by E. N. Ellis, I had previously used for the text book for a DB online exhibition 2021. 

After my spell invigilating I had time to look around the fair and bought three books. I have a storage box for the books I intend to make a design binding for, this box is getting full! My production of design bindings never seems to catch up with my purchases !

今月の9日に、オックスフォードのエグザミネーション校で開催されたオックスフォード・ファインプレス・ブックフェア（12月9日、10日）に行ってきました。フェアにデザイナー・ブックバインダーズが参加しており、そのスタンドの午後の当番をしてきました。

その日、オックスフォードには早めに着いて会場近くで軽い昼食をとり、ボドリアンのウエストン図書館の「アルファベット・アライヴ」という小規模の展覧会を覗いてきました。アルファベットはヴィジュアル・アーティストのみならず文学においても常に人気のあるテーマです。そういうことで、いくつかの興味深い作品が展示されていました。展示作品の一つにE.N.エリス作による「アルファベット」がありました。私は以前、DBのオンライン展覧会（2021年）の為の制作にこの本を使ったことがあります。

当番を交替した後、フェアを見て回る時間があり、本を３冊購入しました。デザイン製本をする予定で購入した本を入れる保管箱があるのですが、これはもういっぱいになってきました。デザイン製本の制作の速度が本の購入の速度に追いつきません！

Artists Making Books

Last month, one of my students invited me to a talk to celebrate the publication of "Artists Making Books", a catalogue to accompany the " Artists Making Books" exhibition at the British Museum. The talk, held in Waterston Bookshop in Kensington, was led by Dr Venetia Porter, the author of the catalogue and Prof. Lina Khatub. Prof. Khatub highlighted a number of the works in the exhibition allowing Dr. Porter to explain more about the exhibits, background etc, the talk ended with a summary of the origin of the artists' book.

 I found the talk to be of interest, deciding that I would like to see some of the exhibited work, which I did earlier this month. The exhibition was smaller than I had initially imagined. However, catalogues are not exhibitions. What I had thought, from the catalogue, to be smaller works were, in fact big and vice versa. Colours and textures came alive and context could be understood. I feel that it is always best to visit an exhibition, to actually see and experience the work on display whenever possible. But, for me, the catalogue will always serve as a reminder of the exhibition. The exhibition is continued until the middle of February 2024.

先月、私の生徒さんが大英博物館で開催されている展覧会「アーティスト・メーキング・ブックス」（芸術家は本を作る）のカタログ出版を祝う座談会に招待してくださいました。座談会はケンジントンにあるウォーターストン書店で、カタログの著者のベニシア・ポーター博士とリナ・ハトゥブ教授によって行われました。ハトゥブ教授が展覧会でのいくつかの作品に焦点をあて、ポーター博士によって出品作品やその背景などを説明されたのち、最後にアーティスト・ブックの由来の概要が述べられました。

座談会は興味深いものでしたので展覧会で作品を見たくなり、今月の早い時期に行ってきました。展覧会は思っていたより小さいものでした。カタログは（どんなに良くても）展覧会とは別物です。私がカタログを見て小さいと思っていた作品が実際には大きく、またその逆もあります。展覧会での作品の色や質感は生き生きとしており、前後の背景も理解できます。私は可能であれば展覧会にいき、実際に展示されている作品を見るのが一番良いと常に思っています。とはいうものの、カタログは私にとって展覧会を思い出させるものとして大いに役立っています。展覧会は2024年2月の中頃まで開催されています。

Bilbao

The end of last month, I went to Bilbao for a few days holiday. Bilbao is a city in the Basque Country and located in northern Spain. The city is well known for having the Guggenheim Museum (contemporary art museum). I have visited there before, although it was in 2007, more than 10 years ago. Somehow I like this modern architecture, shape, use of the materials and location in the city.I was excited to see the museum from the airport bus on my way to my hotel. Yayoi Kusama’s (a Japanese artist) work was on exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, though I am familiar with some of her work I have never seen her monumental works, so it was good opportunity to see aspects of her work I was not familiar with. I was also impressed by the curation of the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum. Each room was coordinated in that an old master piece was shown with a related modern art works. The old part of the city was full of tourists and I felt a little bit tired there. Although, the old library was so beautiful and has a gorgeous  lecture room. Unfortunately, no pictures are allowed to be taken in the old library. However there were pamphlets available that had images. Please see below.

The view from the hotel window was good and the food was good. I ate a lot of Iberico ham and freshly squeezed orange juice.  On the whole, it was good city break.

 

先月末にお休みをとってビルバオに行って来ました。ビルバオはスペイン北部にあるバスク地方の都市です。ここはグッゲンハイム美術館（現代アートの美術館）があることでよく知られています。以前にも行ったことはあるのですが、２００７年のことなのでもう１０年以上も前の話です。どういうわけか、私はこの近代的建築の美術館、形、使用されている素材、都市における所在地などをとても気に入っています。空港からホテルへ向かうバスから美術館を見た時にはワクワクしました。グッゲンハイム美術館では日本のアーティスト草間彌生の展覧会が行われておりました。彼女のいくつかの作品には馴染みがあったものの、今まで一度も彼女の大作、作品群を見たことがなかったので、あまり知ることのなかった彼女の作品の他の側面を見ることのできた良い機会でした。ビルバオ美術館では、その展示内容に感銘を受けました。各展示室では古くからある名作とそれに関連し、調和のとれた現代の芸術作品が展示されていました。旧市街は多くの観光客でひしめきあっており、少し疲れましたが、豪華な講義室をもつ古い図書館は非常に美しかったです。残念なことにこの図書館での写真撮影は禁止されていましたが、小冊子を手に入れることができ、そこからイメージを撮りましたのでご覧ください。

ホテルからの眺めは良く、そして食事は美味しかったです。イベリコ豚ハムと搾りたてのオレンジジュースをふんだんにいただいてきました。全般に良いシティ・ブレイクでした。

Workshop in SOB London & South region

I gave a Japanese book binding workshop for the Society of Bookbinders London & South region on Saturday the 9th of September 2023.  It was the hottest day of this year, getting up to 33° in the afternoon.

Fortunately, the workshop room was relatively cool and it appeared that everyone enjoyed the workshop in spite of the heat. The workshop was about the “Musubi-toji”, a style of binding that was known as  the “Yamato-toji” for a long time. However, according to research carried out by the Imperial Bindery of Japan, it is appropriate to call the Yamato-toji by the new name of Musubi-toji. I mentioned about this change of name before in my post of June 2017. Physical evidence would indicate that the binding style was in use during the 11th century with the binding style still popular in Japan as presentation books, note books and the like. The “Musubi-toji” is unique, in that the same binding method can be used for both ‘limp’ and ‘hard’ bindings. In the workshop, the participant made the ‘hard’ variation with decorative silk threads.

It has been quite a long time since I last gave a workshop in public, because of the pandemic. I enjoyed the company almost as much as the participants.

 

今年の9月9日に製本協会の「ロンドンと南部」支部で和装本のワークショップを行いました。その日は今年最も暑くなった日で、気温が午後には３３度まで上がりました。幸いなことに、ワークショップの部屋は比較的涼しく、暑さにもかかわらず皆さんワークショップを楽しんでおられるようでした。

「結び綴じ」のワークショップでした。これは長いこと「大和綴じ」として知られていた様式です。しかしながら、日本の宮内庁書陵部での調査によると「大和綴じ」と呼ばれていた様式は新たに「結び綴じ」と呼ばれる方が相応しいということです。この変更に関しては、2017年6月のブログでも言及いたしました。この製本様式は11世紀から使われていた物的証拠があり、提出用の本、ノートやその他諸々、日本ではいまだに人気のある製本様式 です。「結び綴じ」は、同じ方法で表紙に柔軟性のあるものを使っても、硬いボードを使っても作れる独特の製本です。ワークショップで参加者は硬いボードと装飾的なシルク糸を使った本を作りました。

パンデミックのため、公でワークショップをするのは随分久しぶりのことでした。私も参加者の皆さんと同じく集まりを楽しみました。

One of my school friends came from Japan for a summer holiday after an interval of three years.　We went to the Courtauld Gallery, although both my friend and myself have visited before, the museum and collection always delights us. There are several good art works by the impressionists and post-impressionists.

I particularly like the paintings by Georges Seurat.  Human figures that are not necessary natural but achieve beautiful compositions by using the division of tone. After our visit we had a refreshing cup of tea in a nearby restaurant.

This summer in London, there has only been a few days in which people can enjoy hot sunny weather, there has been a lot of rain and scattered showers, almost all of the days, though cool, have been comfortable.

高校時代の友人の一人が夏休みで日本から来られました。３年ぶりです。一緒にコートルード・ギャラリーに行きました。友人も私も以前この美術館を訪れたことはあるものの、美術館とそのコレクションはいつも我々を楽しませてくれます。いくつもの印象派、後期印象派の良い作品があり、私は特にジョルジュ・スーラの作品が好きです。人体形は必ずしも自然というわけではありませんが、色彩分割法を用いて美しい作品を導き出しています。その後、我々は近くのレストランでゆっくりとお茶を楽しみました。

今夏のロンドンは、暑い夏を楽しむことができた日はほんのわずかで、雨とぱらつき雨の日が多く、殆どが涼しくてしく過ごしやすい日々でした。

RHS Botanical Art & Photography Show

       The first room of the Botanical Art & Photography Show at Saatchi Gallery

 

For the past few years, I have visited the “RHS Botanical Art & Photograph Show”.

When I first went to the RHS show, the venue was in the RHS office & library building in Victoria. Recently (since the Covid Lock-down), the show has moved to the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea. Previous to the move, the show use display all the participants work but since the move to the Saatchi Gallery the display is limited to award winning works. Perhaps, the quality of the show is better and it seems that more international artists are participating than before. Although, the award selection committee’s taste may not be the same as other people’s taste as, even technically insufficient, people find interesting art works or good ideas in the non awards winning group’s work. Many Japanese and Korean artists got awards this year. I particularly like the Norwegian artist work that is drawn on vellum.

ここ数年「RHS (Royal Horticultural Society/英国園芸学会）の植物画と写真の展覧会」へ行っています。最初にRHSの展覧会に行った時、会場はビクトリアのRHSの本部と図書館のある建物でした。最近（コロナのロックダウン以降）展示はチェルシーにあるサーチ画廊に移りました。会場が移動する前は参加者全員の作品が展示されていましたが、サーチ画廊に移ってからは受賞者の作品のみに限った展示となりました。多分、展示の質は向上し、以前より参加者も国際的になったように思えます。とは言うのもの、賞を選ぶ委員の審美眼は必ずしも他の人達の好みと同じではありませんし、受賞以外の作品の中にはたとえ技術的に力量不足ではあったとしても興味深い作品や良い着想のものがありました。今年は、多くの日本や韓国の作家が賞をとっておられました。私はノルウェーの作家がヴェラムに描いた作品が良いと思いました。

British Flowers Week

June, in the UK, there are so many flowers in bloom, beautifully everywhere.

Last weekend, I went to the British Flowers Week show at the Garden Museum in Lambeth. It is the first time I visited this unique museum. The museum is in the deconsecrated church of St.Mary, Lambeth. There is a small garden next to the museum that has various flowers in bloom including the Calla Lily. 

British Flower Week is a 5 day special event that featured sculptural flower installations, made using seasonal, sustainably-sourced, British-grown flowers arranged by 5 of the county’s top florists. Up stairs there is a permanent exhibition related to gardening, the history of gardens and garden designs. The displays reminded me of when I was a high school student, I belonged to the gardening club.

６月の英国は至る所で多くの花が咲き乱れています。

先週末、ランベスにある庭園美術館（若くは博物館）での「ブリティッシュ・フラワー週間」の展示を見に行ってきました。このユニークな美術館へ行くのは初めてです。美術館はランベスのセント・メアリー教会を改装したものです。美術館の建物の横には小さな庭園がありカラーをはじめ多くの花が咲いていました。 

「ブリティッシュ・フラワー週間」は５日間の特別な催しで、区のトップ５のフローリストが、季節もので、持ちの良い、英国産の花を使って制作した立体作品が展示がされていました。

上階では、園芸に関すること、園芸の歴史、庭園デザインなどの常設展示がありました。これらの展示は私に高校時代を思い出させました。というのは、私は園芸クラブに所属していたのです。
