“Willy
Lott's Cottage”
Recently, I joined one of the workshops at Flatford Mill in Suffolk. Flatford Mill is located in the beautiful English country side and is famous for the paintings by the 19th century landscape artist John Constable. Willy Lott's Cottage, the house painted in his representative work “The Hay Wain” is still standing with much of the surrounding land being very similar to the painting. Flatford Mill is owned by National Trust and leases it to the Field Studies Council which runs several courses and workshops in arts and crafts. I attended the “Botanical Illustration with Coloured Pencils” class, a workshop of some two and a half days. The tutor was Janie Pirie who is a member of Society of Botanical Artists. Janie specalises in floral and botanical art using coloured pencils. The accommodation and facilities are basic and are situated in a Grade 1 listed water mill dating from 1733. Other accommodation is available in Willy Lott's Cottage, again Grade 1 Listed and was constructed in stages over the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. However the class room is a newly built bungalow and was full of light which was very helpful for the drawing sessions. All the members of the class (8 people) were friendly with a good mix of beginners through to advanced levels. Janie is an excellent and experienced tutor and gave us lots of information and demonstrations. I really enjoyed the workshop, although, I have not been in a student for a long time and having to concentrate for two and half days made me a little bit tired.
After
the workshop, I went to Sudbury and visited Gainsborough House which
is the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough and it is now a museum and
gallery. One of the exhibitions I visited was “The Iris Florilegium
of Sir Cedric Morris”. It opened recently and has 27 Iris
watercolour paintings. The exhibition is on until the 3rd
of November. Two of Janie's works
are included in the exhibition and it was a pleasure to be able to
see her renderings in watercolour. Though it was only a few days
break it was a refreshing and rewarding change from London and work.

先日、サフォーク州にあるフラットフォード・ミルでのワークショプに参加してきました。フラットフォード・ミルは美しいイギリスの田園にあり、１９世紀の風景画家ジョン・コンスタブルによって描かれた場所として有名です。彼の代表作「乾草の車」に描かれているウィリー・ロットの田舎屋は、描かれた絵と非常によく似た状態の土地に囲まれて今も建っています。フラットフォード・ミルの所有権はナショナル・トラストにありますが、アートや工芸のいくつものワークショップを運営するフィールド・スタディ・カウンシルに貸し出されています。私は、２日半の「色鉛筆で描く植物画」のクラスに参加しました。先生は植物画協会会員のジャニー・ピリー先生。ジャニー先生は色鉛筆を使って花や植物画を描く専門家です。宿泊施設や設備は必要最低限で1733年に建造されたグレード１指定の（水車による）製粉場にあります。同じくグレード１指定で１６、１７、１８世紀にかけて段階的に建設されたウィリー・ロット・コテージでの滞在も可能です。とは言うものの、教室は新しく建てられた光の沢山入るバンガローで、描写の授業には最適でした。参加者は（８人クラス）は皆さん感じの良い方々で初心者から経験者までが一緒になった良いクラスでした。ジャニー先生は優秀で経験豊富な先生で、多くの情報が与えられ、デモンストレーションをしていただきました。私はこのワークショップをとても楽しみましたが、久く学生の立場でいたことがなく、２日半にわたる集中講義は少し疲れました。
このワークショップの後、サドベリーのトーマス・ゲインズバラの生家、ゲインズバラ・ハウスに行ってきました。現在は博物館と画廊になっています。展覧会の一つ「サー・セドリック・モリスのアイリス花集」展を見てきました。これは最近開催されたもので、２７点のアイリスの水彩画が展示されています。展覧会は１１月３日まで行われています。ジャニー先生の作品２点が展示されていて、彼女の水彩での表現も見ることができたのは良かったです。僅か数日のお休みでしたが、ロンドンと仕事から離れた甲斐がありリフレッシュしました。
