    “GHI” exhibition at Maggs Bros Ltd.

The Designer Bookbinders Winter Exhibition “GHI” is currently on at Maggs Bros Ltd. in Bedford Square.

The alphabet series of DB exhibitions was started during lockdown as a way of exhibiting on the internet. “Art Book Craft (ABC) “ exhibition was held in summer 2020. The second was “Design Equals Function (DEF)” which was held in summer 2021. With the third exhibition, “Gaudium Hora Inceptium (GHI) ” being planed for the Christmas season, December 2022 through to January 2023 by the organisers. The title is Latin, the translation being; Gaudium = Joy / Happiness. Hora = Time / Season. Inceptium = Beginning. I think that both the title and words give encouragement for us for coming New Year 2023.

The “GHI” exhibition will be held until the middle of January 2023. I submitted the Design Box that I made for the  “Box your Book” competition in the Netherlands. This is the first opportunity that I could exhibit my Design Box in the UK.

デザイナー・ブックバインダーズの冬季展覧会「GHI」は、現在、ベドフォード・スクエアのマグス・ブラザース社にて開催されています。DBのアルファベット連続展覧会は（パンデミックによる）ロックダウンの最中にインターネットでの展示という方法をとって始まりました。「芸術、本、手工芸 (ABC) 」展は2020年夏に、2回目の「デザイン、平等、機能 (DEF) 」展は2021年夏に行われました。３回目の「ガウディウム、ホオラ、インチェティウム」は主催者によってクリスマス時期の2022年12月から2023年の1月に行われるよう企画されました。（展覧会の）タイトルはラテン語で、訳は ガウディウム＝喜び／幸福、ホオラ＝時／季節、インチェティウム＝始まり、となります。タイトルと言葉の意味するところは来るべき新年2023年に励みをもたらすように思われます。

「GHI」展は2023年1月中旬まで開催されます。私はオランダでのコンペティション「本の為の箱」に制作したデザイン・ボックスを提出しました。これは、私のデザイン・ボックスをイギリスで展示できた初めての機会です。

At the beginning of November, I took a short break and I went on a trip overseas for the first time in 3 years. 

I went to Alsace and Paris. Around the world, if I have the opportunity, there are some works of art that I would like to see. The Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald in the Museum of Unter Linden is one of these works of art. Some of the art works are easy to access and see, for example when the art works are in a museum of a big city or the art works come to the UK as part of a special touring exhibition. Unfortunately, The Museum of Unter Linden in Colmar is not part of a well know tourist route or destination and I cannot imagine that the Isenheim Altarpiece would be able to be moved out from the Museum of Unter Linden for a touring exhibition. Therefore I had to go Colmar. The Altarpiece is bigger than I thought and now I fully understood this complex triptych construction. The tremendous expression of the Altarpiece may not everybody’s favourite but it is definitely a large scale masterpiece. Matthias Grünewald is of the same generation of Albrecht Dürer. Coincidentally, I could see those two German master artists works this year (please see my January 2022 blog post ). Colmar is famed as a well-presented old town. I enjoyed walking around the old town in the afternoon having finished looking around the museum.

11月初めに短い休暇をとり、3年ぶりに海外旅行をしてきました。アルザス地方とパリに行きました。

世界中に機会があれば見たいと思っている芸術作品がいくつかあります。ウンターリンデン美術館にあるイーゼンハイムの祭壇画はその一つです。いくつかの芸術作品は簡単に見にいくことができます。例えば、その作品が大都市の美術館にある、もしくは作品が特別巡回展の一つとしてイギリスに来る場合などです。残念ながら、コルマールのウンターリンデン美術館はよく知られた観光ルートや目的地ではありません、そしてイーゼンハイムの祭壇画が巡回展でウンターリンデン美術館から持ち出されるというのは想像しがたいことです。というわけで、私がコルマールにいくしかありませんでした。祭壇画は思っていたより大きく、そして漸くこの複雑な三連祭壇画の構造を完全に理解することができました。祭壇画の凄まじい表現はすべての人々のお気に入りではないと思いますが、これは確実に大規模な巨匠の作品です。マティアス・グリューネヴァルトはアルブレヒト・デューラーと同世代です。偶然にも、私は今年このドイツの巨匠二人の作品を見ることができました。（2022年１月のブログをご覧ください）

コルマールは古い街並が上手に紹介されていることで知られています。美術館を見終わった後の午後、この旧市街の散策を楽しみました。

Japan Exhibition

Recently, I went to the “Japan” exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace. 

The exhibition was even a more wonderful thing than I imagined it would be. Most of the art works were to given the English royal family over a period of time. Therefore all the work is of outstanding quality. Highlighting the work of artists and craftsman from Japan.

One of my favourite objects is an inkstand in the shape of a pheasant made with silver and enamels.

The enameling technique used is called Shippo in Japan. There are so many beautiful art /craft works in the exhibition. I attached some images that relate books and Japanese bindings as follow.

 

The exhibition will be held until the 26^th of February 2023.

最近、バッキンガム宮殿のクイーンズ・ギャラリーで開かれている「日本」展に行きました。展覧会は私が思っていた以上に素晴らしものでした。殆どの作品がその当時のイギリス王室に贈られたものです。

したがって作品は極めて良質で、日本の芸術家や名工の最盛期の作品の数々です。

私が気に入った作品の一つは、銀とエナメルで作られた雉の形をしたインク壺です。このエナメルの技術は日本で七宝焼と言われています。この他にも多くの美しい芸術作品、工芸作品が展示されています。

本や和綴じに関連する幾つかの画像を添付します。
