There are many Christmas carols that we can hear in December.

I did not have much chance to hear “The Twelve Days of Christmas” when I was in Japan. Here in England, I often hear this charming carol but I never think the meaning of this cumulative song until this Christmas.

There is the handcraft shop in Barnes that I mentioned in my blog last year (Diamond Jubilee, June 2012). The shop often has very nice window displays.

First, I could not understand why they display a pear tree, some birds, rings and lady dancers. Last Friday (it was Barnes Late Night Shopping day) while I was watching this window, a young mother sung to her daughter this carol that unraveled the mystery.

Coincidentally, I received the nice Christmas card from my friends.

12月に入ると数多くのクリスマス・キャロルを聞く事ができます。というか、聞くことになります。「クリスマスの12日」というのは、日本ではあまり聞く機会はなかったのですが、イギリスに来てからは頻繁に聞いています。

シンプルなメロディーが繰り返される可愛い感じの曲ですが、今まで歌詞の意味を考えることはありませんでした。

私の住んでいるBarnesにある手芸屋さんのことは、昨年の６月のブログ（女王在位60年記念）でもご紹介したことがありますが、このお店は特別なイベントの度になかなか凝ったウィンドウ・ディスプレイをします。

最初にこの飾りを見た時には何の事だかわからず、何故、なしの木が出てくるのか、いろんな鳥がいたり、指輪があったり、女の人が踊っていたりするのかがわかりませんでした。先週の金曜日（この日は、いわゆる商店街のサービスデイで、各お店が商品を安値で用意し、ミンス・パイやモルドワインなどを振る舞ってくれます）私がこのお店の前で飾りを見ていたら、横で若いお母さんがお嬢さんにこの歌を歌ってきかせていました。それで漸くなぞがとけた次第です。

偶然にも友人から素敵なクリスマスカードが届きました。多分、昨年にこのカードをいただいていたら何のことだかわからなかったと思います。

歌詞の一部をコピーしました。クリスマスの１日目から始まり、繰り返しの歌なので２日目からは省略、12日目の全文を載せました。詳しいことは、他のウェブで検索をお願いします。

Miniature Book

The Japanese for miniature book is “Mame Hon”.　If directly translated into English, “Mame” is bean and “Hon” is book. So in Japan we have Bean Books, which I think is quite sweet.

Some people are keen to make miniature books and some are not.

When I was student at Guildford College, one of my classmates Chris, was always making miniature books. I wonder what does he do now ?

I enjoy making miniature books as well. They are fiddly to make and I quite like the fiddly work. They also give me the chance to experiment.

This year, I had the opportunity to make two miniature design bindings for a bookseller in the USA.  The one is already finished and has been delivered, the another will be finished soon.

ミニチュア本は、日本では「豆本」と呼ばれていて、なかなか可愛い言い方だと思います。

豆本作りは、比較的好き嫌いがはっきりと分かれるように思います。豆本というとギルドフォードの学生時代、クラスメートの１人でクリスという男の子を思い出します。彼は在学中いつも豆本を作っていました。卒業後、音信不通になりましたが、今はいったい何をしているのでしょうか？

私も豆本は楽しみながら作っています。多分、細かい作業をするのが好きなことと、サイズが小さいので実験的にいろいろなものを作りやすいからだと思います。

今年は、アメリカの書店からの依頼で豆本を２冊作る機会恵まれました。一冊目は既に製本を済ませアメリカに送り、もう一冊の方も年内に送る予定です。

ウィンチェスター大聖堂

デザイナー・ブックバインダーズは、毎年この時期に全ての会員向けに「秋の集い」を行っており、会員は誰でもこの会に参加することができます。通常、図書館や製本工房の見学会が企画され、普段は公開されていない本や、特別室等を見る事ができます。

今回は、ウィンチェスター・カレッジ（イギリス最古の男子全寮制バブリック・スクール）のフェローズ図書館を見学する機会にめぐまれました。

ウィンチェスターには、ギルドフォードの学生時代に行ったことがありますが、その時は十分な時間がなく市内をゆっくり見て回る事ができなかったので、見学会の当日、友人と集合時間より早めにウィンチェスターに行き、少し市内を見て回りました。とても落ち着いた感じの良い所で、美しい大聖堂があります。

大聖堂ではその日大学の卒業式が行われており、聖堂内にあるモーレイ図書室は閉まって入れませんでしたが、ヨーロッパで一番長い身廊とジェーン・オースティンの埋葬碑を見る事ができました。

集合時間の午後の２時１５分に参加者はカレッジのポーターズ・ロッジに集まり、ジョフリー・デイ博士の案内で４つの図書室と本屋の奥にある製本工房を見学しました。

Every year Designer Bookbinders organises an “Autumn Meeting”.

All DB members be able to attend this meeting and usually it is a tour of a library or a bindery.

This time we had an opportunity to see the magnificent collection of the Fellow’s Library at Winchester College.

I visited Winchester when I was student at Guildford but I did not have much chance to see the city.

On the meeting day, a friend and myself arrived in Winchester earlier than meeting time and we had the chance to walk around the city center. It is a very pleasant place and has the beautiful Cathedral.

Unfortunately, Morley Library in the cathedral was closed on that day, but we saw the longest nave in Europe and the burial place of Jane Austen.

The Autumn meeting members assembled in the Porters’ Lodge at 2:15pm. Dr. Geoffrey Day gave us a tour of the library. We visited 4 rooms and the bindery that is situated towards the back of the bookshop.

New Japanese Binding Workshop

原因はわからないのですが、知らないうちにブログのレイアウトが変ってしまいました。

左列と右列の間のスペースがなくなって、周りに白いスペース枠ができています。

読みづらくなったと思いますが、直すのに時間がかかりそうなので、しばらくこのままでご容赦ください。

１０月からWorkshopとJapanese Binding Workshopの内容を一部変更することにしました。
内容は、Japanese Binding でご覧いただけますが、ここではそれを設定するまでの作業の一部をご紹介します。
まず、最初にミニチュアの試作品を作りました。頭の中で考えているだけだけでは思いつかないようなことも、実際に本を作るとワークショップの時に何が必要か、どんな方法だと効率が良いかというようなことが見えてきます。１回のワークショップで２種類の本を作る場合、２冊のサイズが同じだと便利な場合もあるのですが、混乱を避ける為に異なる形状にしました。

I understand that it is not a nice layout but it takes sometimes to repair of this layout, so please overlook this layout for while.

From this October, I have a new series of courses in Japanese bookbinding.  After spending some time studying the various forms of book binding in Japan, looking at variations and making them, I decided on two book forms as an introduction to Japanese Bookbinding.

Both have the beauty and charm that are instantly recognisable with the art and craft of Japanese bookbinding.
