Dürer’s Journeys
Recently, I went to the “Dürer’s Journeys” exhibition at the National Gallery, London.
The first time I encountered the works of Dürer was in 1972 at the “Dürer and The German Renaissance” exhibition. It was held at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. It was also first time for me to see the works of Lucas Cranach, Hans Holbein, Matthas Grünewald and others. I was quite young at that time and the exhibition gave me a strong impression about German Renaissance artist works. The paintings were so deep and drawings/printings were so detailed. Since then, I have had several opportunities to look at Dürer’s work and each time I have been so impressed by his powerful and delicate work.
“Dürer’s Journeys” exhibition shows Dürer’s works that follows his travels across Europe. It is a manageable sized exhibition which was good for me not too tiring. The drawings and the printings each had their own information board and intrigued me. I feel that the information boards gave visitors more information about the materials used than other exhibitions I have attended. For example, the papers that Dürer used and where the paper came from, or his technique using several drawing materials and tools.
Those attending the exhibition are allowed to take photographs. I took some images that are book related and the information boards.

先日、ロンドンのナショナル・ギャラリーでの「デュラーの旅」展に行ってきました。
私が最初にデュラーの作品に出会ったのは1972年の「デュラーとドイツ・ルネッサンス」展で、東京の国立西洋美術館で開催されていました。ルーカス・クラナッハ、ハンス・ホルバイン、マティアス・グリューネヴァルドや他の作家の作品を見たのも初めてでした。当時、私はかなり若くこの展覧会でドイツ・ルネッサンスの芸術家の作品に圧倒されました。絵画はかなり深く描かれており、デッサンや版画はとても細かく手を施した作品でした。それ以降、何度かデュラーの作品を見る機会はありましたが、毎回彼の力強く繊細な作品に感心したものです。
「デュラーの旅」展ではデュラーのヨーロッパ横断に辿った作品群を展示しています。展覧会はそれほど大きな規模ではなくちょうど良い感じの広さで、然程疲れることもなく見て回れました。
私にとっては、デッサンや版画のそれぞれの作品の解説のボードが興味深かったです。この解説ボードでは閲覧者に対して私が見てきた他の展覧会より紙や画材に関しての多くの情報を提供していると思いました。例えば、デュラーが使った紙がどこから来たのか、または様々な画材や道具を使っての彼の技法などについてです。展覧会の閲覧者は写真撮影が許されていたので、何点かの本に関係した作品と、解説ボードの写真を載せます。
