Recently, I watched an art program about Paul
Cézanne on the TV. It was a repeat program which related to the Cézanne exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery
from 2017 to 2018. The program mainly explained his work and his life by
various art scholars. Coincidentally, I just started to read the chapter of
Cézanne in the book about “Artists partners” (It was written by a Japanese art historian Prof.Nobuyuki
Senzoku, in Japanese). Both the TV program and the book tell that Cézanne hid his
relationship with Hortense Fiquet from
his father for a long time for various reasons.
There are some incidents relating to Cézanne's efforts to hide his relationship with Hortense being both pitiable and funny. Anyway, there are plenty of books written with interesting stories about the life of Cézanne and I do not wish to write about the artist here. The reason I mentioned Marie-Hortense Fiquet is that she was a part time model when she met Cézanne but her main job was bookseller or bookbinder.
Yes, it is completely trivia. Hortense Fiquet tended to put into the category of bad wife and I did not have much interest in her before. However, since read the book, I feel a sense of closeness now knowing her occupation.

つい最近、テレビでポール・セザンヌの番組を見ました。これは2017年から2018年にかけて国立肖像画美術館で開催された展覧会に合わせて作られた番組の再放送です。番組では主に彼の作品と生涯が様々な美術関係の学者によって解説されていました。偶然にも「画家たちのパートナー」（日本の美術評論家、千足伸行氏の日本語で書かれた本）のセザンヌの章を読み始めたところでした。テレビ番組と本の両方ともセザンヌが様々な理由からオルタンス・フィケとの関係を長いこと彼の父親に隠していたことが語られています。セザンヌがオルタンスとの関係を隠すための努力の数々は哀れでもあり滑稽でもあります。いずれにせよ、セザンヌの生涯に関して面白い話の書かれた本は山のようにあり、私はこのブログでこの芸術家のことを書くつもりはありません。私がなぜマリー・オルタンス・フィケの名を挙げたかというと、彼女はセザンヌと会った時にパートタイムでモデルをしていたのですが、彼女の主な仕事は本を売っていたかもしくは製本工をしていたからなのです。そうです、本当に取るにたらない話です。オルタンス・フィケはともすると悪妻の部類に入れられており、以前はそれほど興味を持ったことはありませんでした。しかし、この本を読み彼女の職業を知った今は彼女を身近に感じています。
