Workshop for the SOB Midland Region

I held a workshop for the Society of Bookbinders Midland region towards the middle of this month. The workshop was in making a book and simple case - “Fukuro-toji and Tsubakuro”. While I hold the same workshop at my studio, I had to slightly adjusted the approach for this SOB workshop, taking into account the limited time and the number of participants. The workshop venue was located in Hampton in Arden which is near Birmingham International Airport. Although, It seemed that Hampton in Arden itself appears to be a quiet residential area. On the day, the organiser was suddenly unable to attend, and some participants also arrived late due to traffic conditions. Despite the circumstances, we could managed to finish within the allotted time.

Richard Dadd

I first encountered the works of Richard Dadd when I was a student at Joshibi University of Art and Design. I was looking for 19th century European paintings depicting fairies or angels to use as reference for my graduation project. Dadd's name came up relatively quickly. Then, when I saw his “The Fairy Feller's Maser Stroke”, I was completely captivated by that paining. For a time, I became a bit of Dadd nerd. I researched Dadd's vicissitudes life and I also tried to make a copy of part of this picture. And when I visited the UK, I went straight to Tate Gallery (now Tate Britain) to see this paining. I have missed his exhibition at 1974, but I was able to obtain the exhibition catalogue and I also managed to get hold of two other books about Dadd. I created a file compiling records related to my research. Incidentally, Freddie Mercury of the Queen was also captivated by this paining and created a song of the same title. I had forgotten about such things over the long years, but I am happy to be able to see so many of his works at the current exhibition at the Royal Academy. By the way, for my graduation project, I did not use Dadd's painting as a reference, instead, I used the works of German artist Philipp Otto Runge as source material.

Keats House

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to visit Keats House in Hampstead. I did not know much about Keats, nor had I ever had opportunity to bind his book before. However, ever since I happened to pass by Keats House a few years ago, I had always wanted to see the inside of the house. Just as I thought, the house is well preserved and each room presentation were nice. The family of Keats fiancé lived on the other side of the house, and her room was also open to the public. Perhaps, the garden is likely beautifully maintained under normal circumstances. However, due to a prolonged lack of rain and current watering restrictions, the garden was completely dried out. This visit was a good opportunity to learn – albeit a little - about Keats who died young.

DB Exhibition

Designer Bookbinders have organised two exhibitions this year. The first one was held as part of London Craft Week, which I also introduced on this blog (Please see May 2026 on this site). Fortunately, both books I exhibited at this exhibition sold. One of the books is a re-bound version of a work created about 10 years ago. The title is “REINDEER”, I created the text block with hand writing. I originally made this book because I wanted to use a piece of printed suede leather I had purchased in Denmark; however the style of the printed leather did not match my writing style, resulting in an overall disjointed design. With the re-binding, I believe I have achieved a much better balance in design.

Another DB exhibition will be held at the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh from the 10th to the 29th of August this year. The exhibition is being held at the same time as the Edinburgh Festival, it is gratifying to think that festival-goers might drop by. I will be exhibiting one book “ The first wife a voice for Katherine of Argon” by Deirdre Armes Smith. If you happen to be in Edinburgh during this time, please do stop by the exhibition.

For further details about the exhibition, please visit the website as below.

Early morning walk again

This June saw record breaking heat not only in London but across most of the UK. Compared to the summer heat in humid Japan or other European countries, the situation in UK is still relatively better. However, perhaps because the UK is unaccustomed to such conditions, there have been broadcasts of water related accidents and machinery failing to operate due to the heat. I am relatively tolerant for heat, although, it is not wise to go for a walk in the afternoon. Since afternoon temperatures kept exceeding 30 degrees last week, I changed my walk time to early morning. I use to go for early morning walks during the lockdown (please see the article from June 2020 on this blog site). It is likely that I will be doing them more frequently in the future due to the effects of global warming. This week, the London temperature is much cooler and I enjoyed the evening walk.

DB at the Art Academy Gallery

This year's London Craft Week has held from the 11th to the 17th of May and Designer Bookbinders participated in the event with the support of The Clothworkers' Company. Fellows, Licentiates and the students of DB's Transferring Design Programme* students books were exhibited at The Art Academy Gallery in Bankside. The location of the Art Academy is near Tate Modern and there are many new buildings around the gallery. The Gallery opened throughout London Craft Week and various demonstrations by DB Fellows and Licentiates were held every afternoon during the period. I visited the gallery on Wednesday afternoon with friends and for the private view on Thursday. It was great to see many visitors on both days. This time, there were many works by young Licentiates and perhaps due to the atmosphere of the venue, it felt like a little different DB exhibition than usual. I have not had many opportunities to go to Bankside recently, so I walked around the area this time and found it quite interesting.

Enid Marx

One of my students next project is to bind an unbound copy of “Some Birds & Beasts And Their Feasts” wood engravings by Enid Marx. It is a very charming book. My student said that she likes Enid Marx's works. For some reason, I had never come across any of her works until now. Although, I may have seen her work without realising it was hers. So, after some research, I found that I had actually seen some of her work. Also, I learned that she was active in several design fields, she seems to be better known as a textile designer for London underground seat fabric patterns than a printmaker. It seems that there is no special exhibition about her at the moment in London, however I believe that we can occasionally see some of her works at V&A East, The Postal Museum and London Transport Museum.
