I do not know when the Barnes Bookshop was established, it was already in Church Road when I came to Barnes. I believe that the Barnes Bookshop has been very much related with the local population and looks after individual requirements.
I am not sure how many authors, poets or artists are living in Barnes, however a number of my friends who are artists and poets have had books published, often the book shop has a special reading by the author and signing session with wine and cheese. The shop changed hands a few years ago however the new owner still maintains the local atmosphere in the shop. Recently, the shop moved to new premises, a few meters along Church Rd. Opening after being nicely refurbished.
Because of lockdown, I did not have a chance to visit the shop until today. My eye was drawn to a selection of paper, presentation bags for gifts etc on the theme of “The Tiger Who Came to Tea”. Judith Kerr, the author of “The Tiger Who Came to Tea” lived in Barnes for long time, on impulse, I bought the one of the gift bags.
バーンズ・ブックショップがいつからあるのかは知りません、私がバーンズに来た時は既にチャーチ・ロードにありました。バーンズ・ブックショップはとても地元の住民と関係が深く人々の個別の要求に答えています。
どれほどの作家、詩人、アーティストがバーンズに住んでいるかはわかりませんが、（私の知る範囲で）何人かのアーティスト、詩人の友人達が本を出版した時に、この本屋さんは作家による朗読会やサイン会を企画して、参加者はワインとチーズでもてなされました。数年前にお店の持ち主が新しい人に引き継がれましたが、新しい店主も依然として地本重視の情況を維持しています。最近、お店は同じチャーチ・ロードの数メーター先の店舗に移り、立派に改装された後にオープンしました。
ロックダウンが続いていたので今日までお店に行く機会がありませんでした。お店で最初に私の目を引いたのは「おちゃのじかんにきたとら」がテーマの贈り物用のバッグや包装紙などです。「おちゃのじかんにきたとら」の作家、ジュディス・カーさんはバーンズに長いこと住んでおられた方です。思わずギフト用のバッグを衝動買いしてしまいました。
