The book “Masquerade – Theatrical Sketches – “ is a Christmas present from a relative some years ago. It is written in Russian and I would never say the book condition is good. However, the book is full of beautiful illustrations and the printed year and published year are very intriguing.
“Masquerade” is a verse play and was written by Mikahail Yurievich Lermontov in 1835. The first performance for this play was in the Alexandrinsky Theater (Saint Petersburg) on the 25th of February 1917 the same month as the start of the Revolution in Russia. Although, the first play ended in a big success. The play directed by Vsevolod Emilyevich Meyerhold who was a well known theater director, actor and theater producer in Russian and Soviet. The stage and costume design was by Aleksandr Golovin. He was well known for the original stage production and costume designer of Stravinsky’s “The Firebird”.
The “Masquerade”-Theatrical Sketches- is obviously the record of the first performance and dedicated to Golovin’s art work. The book was printed in 1941, the middle of the second world war and published in 1946. This explains the poor paper quality and binding. I am not able to read this book because I do not read Russian, however Golovin’s illustrations are just beautiful. I am thinking to make the special box for this book. The story of the Masquerade of Lermontov is a tragedy and suspicion born in the aristocrat society.
In 1941, Aram Khachaturian wrote the orchestral music for the stage production of the “Masquerade”, though he chose five movements from the theater music and reconstructed it in “a suite” which is better known these days.
「仮面舞踏会 –劇場用スケッチ−」は数年前のクリスマスに親戚からプレゼントされた本です。ロシア語で書かれていて本の状態は決して良いとは言えません。けれども美しいイラストが満載されており、印刷された年と出版された年にはとても興味深いものがあります。
「仮面舞踏会」は1835年にミヒャエル・ユーリエヴィッチ・レルモントフが詩の形式で書いた戯曲です。初演は1917年2月25日にアレクサンドリンスキー劇場（サンクトぺテルブルグ）で行われましたが、同じ月にロシア革命が始まっています。とは言うものの、初演は大成功をおさめました。演出はフセヴォロド・メイエルホリド、ロシアとソビエトで演出家、俳優、劇場制作者としてよく知られていました。舞台と衣装デザインはアレクサンドル・ゴロヴィンによるもので、彼はストラビンスキーの「火の鳥」の最初の舞台制作と衣装デザインでよく知られていました。
「仮面舞踏会 –劇場用スケッチ−」は言うまでもなく初演の資料でゴロヴィンの作品への献呈です。印刷は1941年で第二次世界大戦の最中、本が出版されたのは1946年です。これは紙質と製本の貧しさの原因の説明となります。私はロシア語を読めないのでこの本を読むことはできないのですがコドヴィンの描画は実に美しいです。私はこの本のために特別な箱を作ろうと考えています。
レルモントフの「仮面舞踏会」の話は貴族社会での猜疑心から生まれた悲劇です。1941年にアラム・ハチャトリアンが「仮面舞踏会」の劇場制作にオーケストラのための曲を書きました。でも彼はその劇場曲の中から５曲を選んで再構成し「組曲」にしました。今日ではその組曲の方がよく知られています。
