Recently, I went to the “Gold” exhibition at the British Library. The organiser of the Chelsea bookbinding class is a member of the British Library and she kindly invited me this exhibition.
Though the exhibition is relatively small there are a wide range of works on view. The Japanese Lotus Sutra caught my eye in the first room. The scroll is beautifully written in gold and the head of the axis is a delicately made with gold. Then, The Virgin Mary’s leaf at the halfway point of the exhibition. The divine light has represented with gold. It comes from a Book of Hours made for King Louis XII by Jean Bourdichon. It is simply stunning.
One of the Bourdichon’s “Book of Hours” also is exhibited, the opened page illustration shows that the shell gold paining technique was used. There is a short video which explains some of the techniques of the art of working with gold. For example, gold tooling on leather, shell gold painting, etc.
In the last cabinet in the exhibition has a display of some books that have magnificent gold tooling.
Perhaps, the wide range of works on exhibition offers a variety of works that enable people to have a wider experience of the art and craft of gold. I attached some images as follow that attracted my interest in the exhibition.

先日、大英図書館での「ゴールド」の展覧会に行ってきました。チェルシーの製本クラスのまとめ役をしてくださる方が大英図書館のメンバーで、親切にこの展覧会に招待してくださったのです。
小さな展覧会ではありましたが展示されている作品は広範囲にわたるものでした。最初の部屋では日本の法華経が目につきました。巻子本は金で美しく書かれており、軸頭は金で実に繊細に作られていました。そして、展覧会の中間に聖母マリアの絵がありました。天上からの光が金を使って描かれています。これはジャン・ブルディション作によりルイ１２世のために作られた時祷書からのものです。美しい、の一言です。
ブルディションの時祷書の一冊も展示されており、シェル・ゴールドの技法を使ったイラストのあるページが開かれていました。金を使って作品制作をする幾つかの技法を説明するビデオがありました。例えば、革への金箔押しや、シェル・ゴールドを使っての描写、等々。
展覧会の最後の展示ケースには壮麗な金箔押しをされた何冊かの本が展示されていました。
おそらく、展覧会で多岐にわたり並べられた作品は、（展示を見に来た）人々が金の工芸、芸術の幅広い経験を持てるように様々な作品が提供されているのでしょう。この展覧会で私が興味を持った作品の画像を下記に添えます。
