On the 6th of July, the award ceremony of the 4th Designer Bookbinders International Competition was held alongside the private view of the exhibited entries in the Weston Library in Oxford. Originally, it was planned for 2021 to coordinate with the celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the founding of the Oxford Botanic Gardens. However, it was postponed, much as same as other events because of the Covid-19 lockdown.
The theme of the competition is Botanical, including any books connected with gardens, flora and plants.
The exhibition title is “A Gathering of Leaves”.
A leaf also means a sheet of paper, especially a page in a book (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary).
Gathering is one of the bookbinding terminology that mean a group of leaves taken together, one inside another, in binding a book.’(Oxford Dictionary of English). What a perfect title for this exhibition !
The classification of the awards are same as the previous Designer Bookbinders international competitions and some related events were also the same. There are 28 awards which include the “Sir Paul Getty Bodleian Prizes”, “DB Distinguished Awards” and “Oxford University Students’ Choice”. “The Festival of Bookbinding” is a new series of events related to books, bookbinding and the competition.
On Friday the 8th, there are several lectures and demonstrations related to bookbinding in the lecture room in the Weston Library. On Saturday the 9th, there were a workshop, mini-demonstration and a trade fair at the Blackwell Hall in addition to the lectures and demonstrations. I attended one lecture and one demonstration on Friday. I enjoyed both very much.
The exhibition is open until the 11th of September at the Weston Library and will go on a mini tour of the U.K. The next venue is at Sotheby’s in London between 21st and 29th of September, then from the 4th of November 2022 to the 25th of February 2023, the exhibition will be held at the University of Edinburgh Library.
７月６日にオックスフォードのウェストン図書館で展覧会内見会とともに第４回デザイナー・ブックバインダーズの国際製本コンペティションの授賞式が行われました。本来はオックスフォード植物園の設立400年記念の祝典に合わせて2021年に予定されていたのですが、他の多くの催し物と同じくCovid-19のロックダウンで延期となりました。このコンペティションのテーマは植物、本の中に庭園、花、草木を含んでいればそれも認められています。展覧会のタイトルは “A Gathering of Leaves”です。Leafは（植物の葉の他に）本の紙の一葉を意味し、Gathering は、製本用語で「丁合い」のことです。この展覧会にはうってつけのタイトルです。
賞の分類はこれまでのデザイナー・ブックバインダーズ国際コンペティションと同じで、それに伴う催しも変わりありません。「ポール・ゲッティ卿ボドリアン賞」「秀逸賞」「オックスフォード大学の学生によって選ばれた特別賞」からなる２８の賞が授与されました。全ての受賞作品は上記ウェブサイトでご覧いただけます。
「製本のフェスティバル」は本、製本、そしてこのコンペティションに関連した新しいイベントです。
８日の金曜日にはウェストン図書館の講義室で幾つかの講義とデモンストレーションがありました。９日の土曜日には講義やデモンストレーションに加え、ブラックウェル・ホールでワークショップ、ミニデモンストレーション、（製本関係用具、材料などの）販売会が行われました。私は金曜日の講義とデモンストレーションに一つずつ参加し、両方ともとても楽しみました。
展覧会は９月１１日までウェストン図書館で開催された後、英国内のちょっとした巡回があります。
次の会場はロンドンのサザビーズで９月２１日から２９日まで、そして１１月４日から来年の２月２５日まではエディンバラ大学の図書館で開催されます。
